Is it worth staying near Chicago Airport?

You might have an airport-area address on your shortlist and notice that O'Hare has a direct CTA Blue Line connection to downtown Chicago. That sounds like the two big journeys are sorted. But how would you get from the accommodation to the train with your bags? Staying near O'Hare can be worth it when that connection makes your flight or onward journey easier. For a downtown-focused visit, the train is a reason to compare both bases, rather than automatically choosing the airport. Source
O'Hare terminal access: where would you meet the train or shuttle?
Which terminal will you use? O'Hare's CTA station is in the lower-level concourse, directly connected to Terminals 1, 2 and 3. From Terminal 5, passengers can take the Airport Transit System, or ATS, to Terminal 2 to reach CTA trains. That distinction matters when you're carrying luggage: the downtown rail connection exists, but reaching it involves a different sequence from Terminal 5.
Hotel and off-airport parking shuttles pick up at Terminal 2 Arrivals curbside, and some also pick up at Terminal 5. The word 'some' matters here. A Terminal 5 arrival doesn't establish that the accommodation you're considering has a pickup there. Confirm the pickup point for the particular shuttle before treating it as an easy terminal transfer. Source
Ask about both directions of the journey. Where would you meet the shuttle after landing, and where would it drop you for departure? Confirm whether it runs when you need it and whether you have to arrange a pickup. Those answers are more useful than a general promise of being near the airport.
Now consider the same address with a different purpose: going out for the day. Would you need to return to the airport to start that journey, or would another connection work better? A transfer you find reasonable once with a suitcase may feel less appealing when it becomes part of every outing. Choose around the journey you'll actually make most often.
- Which terminal will you use?
Check where your train or shuttle leaves and how to reach it from your arrival or departure terminal.
- Where does your shuttle pick up and drop off?
Ask the hotel where its shuttle picks you up at the airport and where it drops you off for your flight.
- How will you get to your outings or next stop?
Check how you’ll get from the hotel to each outing or your next stop before booking.
Would the Blue Line suit your downtown plans?
Trains from O'Hare station pass through downtown. That makes an airport base possible for a trip with downtown plans, but it doesn't tell you the journey from your accommodation to the places you want to visit. The missing pieces are the connection to the station and the journey after you leave the train. Compare those with an address closer to your planned activities.
Suppose you want to head out, come back for a break, then go out again. Count those journeys too, rather than comparing only the trip with your luggage. For a visit centred on downtown, I'd give repeated access to your plans more weight than proximity to a flight you'll take once. For a brief stop with one outing, you may reasonably decide the terminal connection matters more.
Does your onward journey use the Multi-Modal Facility?
Downtown isn't necessarily your next destination. Scheduled regional buses pick up at O'Hare's Multi-Modal Facility, and regional buses connect the airport with destinations in Illinois, Indiana and Wisconsin. The ATS connects Terminals 1, 2, 3 and 5 with the facility. For a trip continuing into the region, those connections may give an O'Hare stay a clearer purpose than using it as a base for city outings. Source
The Multi-Modal Facility also connects to rental cars, Economy Parking Lot F, Kiss 'n' Fly, Pace buses and Metra. If your onward trip involves a rental car, Pace bus or Metra, use that specific connection as the starting point for comparing places to stay.
Work backwards from that onward departure. Confirm where your service leaves, then check how you would get there from the accommodation with your luggage. If the overnight stay makes that departure simpler, staying near the airport has a practical advantage. If reaching the departure point adds an awkward extra journey, compare another base before committing.
You also don't have to make one address work for the whole trip. A separate night before onward travel may be worthwhile if it removes a difficult transfer. Balance that benefit against packing up and changing accommodation. Moving earns its place when it solves a specific problem, rather than merely putting you nearer an airport on paper.
Flying through Midway changes the comparison
Check the airport name before narrowing your search. Midway is on Chicago's southwest side, and its Orange Line connects with the downtown Loop and also serves the Southwest Side. Midway's CTA station is just east of the terminal, linked by an enclosed walkway. Orange Line trains travel clockwise around the Loop before returning to Midway, so check the relevant stop and direction when comparing addresses. O'Hare's terminal connections don't answer the accommodation question for a Midway flight. Source
For either airport, choose the stay that makes your actual plans easier. A flight-focused stop, several downtown outings and an onward regional departure are different reasons to choose an address. The strongest airport-area choice is the one whose connection you can explain clearly before you arrive.
