Where to stay in Bali as a couple

Start with what you both want to do in Bali. If galleries and museums are on your list, look at Ubud. If you're planning around meals out and shopping, compare Seminyak. Sanur is worth a look for its beach path and places to eat, while Nusa Dua has a resort focus. The right choice depends on your plans and the address you choose, rather than which area gets called the most romantic.

You don't need to agree on everything. But it helps to work out what each of you would miss if it wasn't part of the trip.

Which area fits your trip?

Ubud: galleries and museums

Ubud is in central Bali and has art galleries and museums. If those are places you both want to visit, it belongs on your shortlist. If they're only a passing interest, don't build your whole stay around them. Source

There are places to stay in the centre and outside it, and the terrain is hilly. Check the routes you'd actually use, especially if slopes or steps could be a problem. A place outside the centre might appeal to you, but think about how you'd get out for meals and activities before choosing it.

Seminyak: meals out and shopping

Seminyak is north of Legian and Kuta, with dining, fashion and accommodation in the area. It's part of South Bali's main west-coast urban area, where traffic can be congested. If you're interested in eating out and shopping, compare addresses near the places you want to visit rather than picking somewhere on the area name alone. Source

An appealing list of restaurants doesn't tell you how much time you'd spend getting to them. Look at the journeys your plans would involve and decide whether that's how you want to spend your holiday.

Sanur: a beach path and places to eat

Sanur Beach, east of Denpasar, has a pedestrian path along the beach, food stalls and restaurants. If a walk by the beach and a meal out sound like your kind of day, put it on the list. Then check how you'd reach those places from the accommodation you're considering. Source

Nusa Dua: a resort-focused stay

Nusa Dua is in southern Bali, with a high-end resort focus and beachside accommodation. It may suit the kind of stay you want if you're planning to spend plenty of time at the accommodation. Still, check the specific room, facilities and location against your budget. The area description won't tell you what's included. Source

Check the place, not just the area

Once you've narrowed it down, look at actual addresses. Pick a few outings you're likely to make and check how you'd get there from each place. That gives you something more useful to compare than a broad description of the neighbourhood.

If privacy matters, check that separately. For a private pool, ask whether it's exclusively for your room or accommodation, whether anyone else shares it, and whether nearby spaces overlook it. Do the same for a terrace or outdoor seating area. A nice photo can't answer those questions.

It's also worth talking about what “romantic” means to each of you. One person might want time alone together; the other might be picturing meals out and things to do. Getting that clear now makes it easier to choose a place you'll both enjoy.

One base or two?

If both cultural visits and beach time are a big part of your plans, compare a stay in Ubud with a coastal stay. Splitting the trip could give each part its own base. But it also means packing, checking out, moving your bags and settling in again.

Before adding a second stop, ask what it would let you do that one base wouldn't. Check the transfer between the actual addresses, too. If the extra stop adds little to the trip, you may prefer to stay put and leave more time unplanned.

Before you choose a base
  1. What do you both want to do?

Each of you picks the things you'd be disappointed to miss.

  2. Which areas fit those plans?

Use the options above to narrow your list.

  3. How would you get around?

Check the actual address and the journeys you'd make from it.

  4. Is moving worth it?

Decide whether a second base adds enough to justify packing up again.
